Why do my DeviceLink Jobs for Rockwell Studio 5000 PLC's fail after configuration?

After successfully configuring a Rockwell Studio 5000 PLC in Copia's DeviceLink, you may run into a failure when running the job initially.

First, make sure that RSLinx is the selected communication software and is running as a service, as called out in the Agent notes here:

Second, once confirmed, if you are still getting errors, such as either of the following:

  • got an Exception while setting property CurrentCommPath
  • RxE_COMM_DTLERROR - Failed to call RSLinx

Generally, this is due to an incomplete RSLinx Harmony file, and can often be address by opening Rockwell Studio 5000 and going online with the device.

As an alternative to the process you described, you can also try the following to resolve the (0x80043A1D): RxE_COMM_DTLERROR - Failed to call RSLinx error. Instead of going online with the controller, try opening RSLinx and navigating to the device in question. Once you find it, expand the device tree all the way down until you're able to see the slot number assigned to the processor. This process can also help update the required files for a successful backup and is usually less time-consuming.

Please note that this alternative process doesn't work for all controllers, and sometimes going online is still necessary.

While this setup may feel a bit cumbersome at first, it is a one-time process. Once the first job is successful, future jobs should continue to work as expected without any manual intervention.

We always recommend that once your system is setup, perform a backup of your RSLinx configuration, and save it in Copia for safekeeping in case the Harmony file becomes corrupted in the future (which is not uncommon with Rockwell software)
